A better title than 'Why does IE use up so much CPU/RAM?' Would be 'Why is IE using up so much CPU/RAM'. Or if you only meant CPU not RAM, then say 'Why is IE using up so much CPU' And if you only meant it for that particular page that is crashing then say 'Why is IE 11 struggling to load this page'. – barlop Feb 16 '17 at 0:37. I'm at a loss as to why my Windows 10 laptop is consuming so much CPU from explorer.exe instances. I've attached two screenshots showing five explorer instances using about 15% CPU each. I have absolutely no idea what they are doing and if I kill them, nothing happens. The explorer instances are not always there consuming tons of CPU. I haven't been able to really determine a pattern as to when they start consuming all the CPU. The thing that triggers me to look is when my fan kicks in. Once the cooling fan kicks in I know that the CPU is getting railed by these explorer instances. I'm not sure where to go look for information pertaining to these processes and what resources they might be accessing that causes this.My CPU usage will go up to 95% with these processes and I'm trying to figure what could be causing it.I've used Process Explorer to try and get more info.
If I explore the threads running on the explorer instances they all seem to have this one thread that is consuming the CPU: ntdll.dll!RtlReleaseSRWLockExclusive+0x50Any help is greatly appreciated.Edit:No viruses detected on any scans. The explorer instances will appear even if I am not looking at any files or folders. As for the type of files and folders I am browsing.? ![]() Windows Explorer Using Too Much Cpu In Task ManagerJust regular files. The issue is happening as I'm typing this and I have no folder browsing instances of windows explorer open (the processes are still there of course).Software open on my computer while it's occurring:. Google Chrome. Visual Studio 2017. Outlook 2013. Tableau. Paint. Task ManagerUpon closing them all (except Task Manager) the processes still persist.Edit 26-Feb-2019:I currently have two explorer.exe threads using 15% CPU each. If I look at the disk activity in Resource Monitor I see nothing being used by either.Windows 10 Build: Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.316). From what I can tell, the thing causing this issue was actually the Show all folders navigation pane option in Windows Explorer. If I disable this option, I don't see any obscene CPU usage. If I turn it back on, and open a new Windows Explorer instance, it will immediately start consuming about 15-20% CPU and doesn't seem to stop. Maybe this has to do with the folders that are shown in the navigation, however, I've disabled it for now and will update this answer if anything should change.Your mileage may vary. This worked for me, I'll attempt to investigate why. If I were to hazard a quick guess, it may be due to Network/Shared Folders. End Task of running programs Quick Fix 2. Windows Explorer Using High Cpu Windows 10I've been fighting high CPU utilization (caused by iexplore.exe) and looking for answers (I use XP-SP2, IE7, AMD, HP laptop). After reading many many posts I found a suspect in MDM.exe (Microsoft Debug Manager). By checking 'Disable Script Debugging' in Internet ExplorerToolsOptionsadvanced (3 different check boxes) and killing the process in Task Manger - I've found the Internet explorer is many times faster and GMAIL works much much smoother. 'Ajax' pages (like gmail) seem to cause the poblem. I most often came up with the 99% CPU (iexplore.exe) when exiting gmail. It seems to be fixed. If you need to use script debugging, turn it on and monitor Task Manger. Microsoft's suggestion, in their Support articlewhich recommends editing the registry.Excerpt:'After all running instances of Mdm.exe are ended and no longer listed within Task Manager, you can delete any of the TMP files from the root of the Windows directory without affecting either the Microsoft Script Editor or Mdm.exe. The effect of taking this step is that remote debugging is disabled, provided that an instance of Mdm.exe is not started at the time an error is encountered. However, if another application reinstalls Mdm.exe, or if Mdm.exe /Regserver is run on a computer that is running Window 95 or Windows 98, Mdm.exe is re-added to the RunServices registry key (see above for full path).' In my case, I'm still using 98se, so I did some other things that helped my speed. If you Start/Run/'msconfig' and then go to Startup on that screen you can find a list of programs that are running- background or foreground- every time you start Windows. I was able to uncheck several programs, per this thread:especially here:I recommend that all Windows users (is that like 'drug users'?) bookmark the Ultimate Troubleshooter site whether or not you buy their program. (I haven't)The UT is AFAIK a good program; it probably does the registry changes itself. But many problems can be eliminated by a simple uncheck somewhere. Note though that we may have to keep an eye on things if mdm.exe or another is put back in play, per Microsoft above.Sidebar on 98:You can slso uncheck Critical Update and related things once you have bled Microsoft dry on any posted updates, because 98 isn't getting any new support. (98 wasn't broke- finally- so they fixed it. )Hope this helps more than one person. This is a good Forum.
